Tour My (Old) Home

I cannot tell a lie. This House Tour has caused me some grief. I have agonized over how clean my house has to be. So much so that my sister was forced to come to my rescue. I had procrastinated long enough and she was coming to visit and prod me into action. The coffee had worn off. She knew my perfectionism streak would come out and paralyze me. We drank wine and she took photos. And the best part is I have a clean house, for now.

This house was built in the 1950’s. It is contemporary in style and was a mess when we moved in. A mess with potential. I love the private setting, the amount of natural light, the big yard, and the high ceilings. It is small but maximizes the space and is well designed. It has clean lines and I have tried to bring warmth into it. We have lived in this house for three years now and it is still a work in progress.

This room is divided into a dining room, visible from the kitchen and our living room, below.

If you look carefully, you can see the pool out back. Just kidding. It is only blue tarps over the garden. This is a fabulous view into our yard. It is what I love most about this house.

I am going to show you a few before pictures that I have. These were not taken with blogging in mind, so they are not great, but it will give you an idea of what we started with.

The living room, before.

We removed three layers of floor, including this back tile, which we still have downstairs.

We removed the paneling and put up drywall in the foyer.

The kitchen was in pretty good shape. New cabinets were already in, we just added finishing touches and carried the new floor in for a seamless transition.

New solid wood bamboo floor being installed. We wanted a durable floor that could be refinished if necessary. It has held up very well.

Family Room. We still have that black tile floor. I hope one day to be able to replace it as well.

My style has evolved with each house we have lived in. I loved the challenge of fitting my traditional furniture and things into a more contemporary space. I could not afford to get new stuff every time, so I have had to use what I have and make it work. The result is a comfortable space that I love.
